Mix up equal parts sugar and spice and you’ve found yourself a recipe for Lovey! A beautiful buckskin rescued from auction, Lovey found herself a safe landing at Believe along with her friend, Betty. Both girls seemed to have experienced some trauma in the auction environment that caused them to develop a heavy bond with one another. For quite some time, separating them for evaluation and training proved to be a challenge. But the resilience and heart of these horses continue to amaze us, and both horses have made huge strides lately! Our trainer has been able to do quite a bit of ground training with Lovey now and describes her as eager to learn most days. She is benefitting from the building of bonds, discipline, and communication by bringing things back to basics on the lunge line. Lovey has also been ridden by our team a handful of times, including having a kid or two on her back! She hasn’t displayed any major issues but seems to have skipped past ground work and gone straight to riding in her previous training. This spunky girl looks to be nicely green broke but she does need a rider who is confident with pushing her and providing strong direction. However, we are still getting to know Lovey in a working sense and, as we continue to reduce the pain in her feet, we are interested to see how her personality and approach to work are affected. This pretty gal is already a comfortable ride and we are excited to book in more saddle time with her! We think that, with proper support for her feet, she could excel as someone’s partner.
In the field, Lovey lives with a mix of mares and geldings, including her BFF Betty. She is one of the top horses on the totem pole but still gets along well with her herd. She is often one of the first horses at the gate and she loves people and attention! Lovey is appropriately described as a love bug who loves cuddles, though that can drive her to be a bit pushy and she seems to forget that people have personal space that should be respected. She is a sweetheart of a gal but can also be a typical mare at times, letting her bossy side show. Lovey isn’t quite so loving of the vet and farrier, though, but is improving.
Lovey is up-to-date on vaccines, worming, teeth float, farrier, and vetting.
Recommended Rider: Suitable for a Trainer or Advanced rider working regularly with a trainer that is confident with dominant horses. Lovey needs further work and finishing to reach her full potential. She will benefit from consistent work with a confident rider and a strong, assertive leader. Thanks to her love of attention, Lovey would also thrive as a companion horse.
Adoption Requirements: Lovey was brought to rescue from auction with another mare named Betty. These two have shared a close bond due to this shared trauma, though both mares have been making wonderful progress with settling in and making new friends. At this time, their bond is still strong enough that being separated causes them distress, so they will need to be adopted together.
Ailments/Limitations: Lovey has had x-rays taken that show she has sidebone. She also has softer soles on her feet that can cause her some pain and discomfort. She is currently working on corrective care with our farrier and using Cloud boots to build up more hoof and sole and to ease her sensitivity. A good hoof care regimen will likely be needed throughout her life to keep her happy and pain-free.
LOVEY IS STILL UNDERGOING TRAINING AND EVALUATION AT BELIEVE RANCH & RESCUE AND IS NOT CURRENTLY UP FOR ADOPTION. HOWEVER, SHE WILL BE AVAILABLE AND LOOKING FOR HER FOREVER HOME SOON!
